Amys Favorites #2: The Phantom Agony

Lange Zeit war mein Favorit "Cry for the moon", jetzt ist es "The Phantom Agony".

Translation: This time I want to tell you something about the album, or even the band that brought me to Female Fronted Metal. Remember, I started with Dimmu Borgir and Graveworm. So a girl from my class back in those days, had heard that I abandoned the "normal" music everyone was listening to (trust me, as the whole class found out, it was kind of a scandal!) and found a Metalhammer her father had read at home and gave it to me. As you might know, there is always a CD included and the short single-version of "The Phantom Agony" was on it. I listened to it and came to like it immediately. Of course I had heard of other bands with a female singer, like Nightwish or Within Temptation, but I was kinda skeptical. But Epica kind of opened my mind and I soon started to listen to other bands with girls, too. I bought the whole album a little later and then spent the whole evening listening to the songs, reading the lyrics and translating the latin choirs (yes, I'm nerdy as that).
Now Epica have released three albums, a ton of singles, an EP with DVD, a live album and a soundtrack. Next month their fourth studio album will be released. If I had to chose, I would still pick "The Phantom Agony" as my favorite album. It is not the hardest, but to me it has the most appealing atmosphere. For a long time, my favorite track was "Cry for the moon", now it is "The Phantom Agony". What I also like is that the songs are so diverse, but don't lack the "Epica feeling". I mean the certain sound or style a band has, is very important to me, especially since in Female Fronted Metal you often hear complaints like "But this all sounds like Nightwish!". Epica do have that sound and they already had it on this, their first album (some bands need to find that style at first). This sound often is tied to the voice of the singer and to be honest, Simone could sing me the phonebook. It's not just her voice, even without it, you have that signature feeling, that marks the songs as belonging together.

Amy's Favorites #1: Decipher

I want to start the New Year on this blog with two things: First, I blog bilingual again, second, I want to start a new series of articles called "Amy's Favorites", which will mainly be about music, my favorite albums, videos and festivals. I will also make a site with all the lables, so you can find them easier, since in the new dynamic view, there is no table of contents anymore.
The first one in the series will be the album Decipher by After Forever. it came out in 2001, After Forever split up in 2009. I got the CD for Easter 2005. Now I count this album to one of the best records of all times. When i listened to it the first time, it seemed I couldn't get into it. I found it, boring and when I gave it a few more trials, I got the feeling that it actually was just "bad". Now, many of the people around me who listen to Metal only told me how great it actually is. After all, I had a Special Limited Edition (stickers, video, like tracks) and didn't want it to gather dust, so I tried for half a year. After that, it suddenly made *Click!* in my head and I started loving it. I actually listened to it more times a day and found it brilliant and heard something new and genius everytime. Now I have my music collection on Shuffle on my Zen and I'm happy to hear a Decipher track every time it switches to one. It's been a long  time since there was a day, when I didn't hear a song from that album. It almost never gets boring. Old After Forever stuff really isn't the quickest delight, but I wanted to tell you to listen to that record and even if it takes a few times until you like it, it will be worth the while and the money!

R.I.P. Nicole Bogner

I'm really sad about hearing that Nicole Bogner died, aged only 27. I'm a big fan of Visions of Atlantis since 2005 and it was her voice that actually brought me to like the band. I was very frustrated when I heard she left the band, but this news really is very, very mournful.

This is the music video to "Lost", the first song I heard from Visions and it still counts to my favorites.
Rest in Peace, Nicole. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Metal Bellydance

So I wanted to share some videos I saw on youtube and found deadly amazing.

I think she is very talented...and I must say, I like her boobs. *cough* They're hard not to notice ;) The song is from Orphaned Land, a band from Israel, it is called "Seasons unite", if I remember right.
Anyway, it will take me a painfull lot of dancing lessons and practising and exercising, to get anywhere near her style. Her channel name is dianabelly and she has a bunch of other cool videos (which don't have as much views as this one), go check them out!

An this one:
First: it is a song from Epica, so I kinda liked it before I watched it ;) . Second: that girl is only 19, is a bellydancer since 6 years (all according to her channel info) and I'm in awe at her moves and expertise. She has a hell lot of belly dance videos, go check her out. Although i must say that I think she overuses the shimmy, a move quite popular when it comes to dancing to Metal...

Anyways, my quest for the coming time is, to practise more bellydance, so I might be as good as the two of them one day!

Review: Princess Alessa and the Frog War

I really enjoyed reading this book. At first I found it a bit difficult to get into, but you soon started to love the characters and of course I wanted to know who the bad guy is.
The main characters are easy to grow fond of and they really have something like a personality. Also, Albino gave them great lines, I especially loved „I'm a princess in distress. You're a prince. Save me now!“.
The plot developed fast, I didn't find much dull moments and I finished the book after three days because I couldn't put it down. There are many unexpected events in the story.
The language was easy, also for someone like me whose mother tongue isn't English. There aren't many „bad words“.
I guess the book was made for a younger audience, because of the age (16) of Alessa, the main character and the lack of foul-mouthedness. It's kinda like a long and complex fairy tale.

On the other hand, there were some things I didn't enjoy so much. In the last third of the book there are a hell of new characters introduced, which made it for me somewhat difficult to follow the story because I always had to stop and think „Huh? Who was that again and what did they want?“. But probabaly that's just me and my bad memory.
There were some grammar mistakes and a word missing here or there.
The bad guys were just evil, you actually didn't learn why they did what they did – except for the main villain, who was kind of the boss of the other villains.

Now that I've finished the book I can say that I really enjoyed it very much and hope there's a sequel, especially since some character's stories don't seem to be told and the end suggested that it's not yet a fairytale-happy-end. I really hope there's a sequel. I received a free copy of this book to write a honest review about it, I wasn't encouraged to say good things.

Inspired by: Invisible Circles

After almost an eternity I listened to „Invisibele Circles“ by After Forever again. It actually describes my 'youth' (the time I went to school) pretty good, except the dysfunctional relationship to the parents (my parents are great, my dad even went to concerts with me!!!).
For everybody who doesn't know the concept album:
It's about a dysfunctional family. There's the mother, who regrets becoming pregnant in the first place and blames her daughter for everything. The father is equally frustrated, a workaholic, who didn't want kids and physically abuses his daughter. As if the poor girl hadn't it hard enough in life, she also goes through a pretty hard time in school. To forget everything, at least for some time, she escapes into her virtual world, where she is the Queen and everybody loves her (I guess she is online in chatrooms and message boards).
In the end, the grandmother comes to visit and explains, that she made many mistakes raising her own children and that everythign is a vicious circle. After many years, the daughter, now a mother herself, finds her old diary again and realizes, that she became pretty much like her parents.
This is by the way the first album without Mark Jansen, who left, or was kicked out after the second album „Decipher“ (one of my All-time-favorites!) and now turns his ideas into genius music (my opinion) with Epica and MaYaN.
And is their first album that deals with social problems and not moral or religion. There's also a lack of latin choires :(
After „Invisible Circles“ the band released „Remagine“, their Best-of „Mea Culpa“ and „After Forever“. Then, after a pausing for a year, the split up.
Actually I always ranted about After Forever – however they are my most-listened-to band on last.fm. I kept on lamenting why they kicked out Mark, why they found social problems more intersting than religion and if I only dreamed the paralells to Star Trek or were they actually there? When they announced that they split, I felt like the old Salamano in Camus' „L'etrange“ who keeps on cursing his dog and then is terribly sad and sorry as the dog runs away.

As you can see the album's main color is blue. The band even had worn blue and black costumes. Now after listening to the album through one time I suddenly wanted to paint my nail blue with this nailpolish from Beyu. I also wore a blue make up to Uni (created with the Zoeva Palette). And yes, the stains of Eyeliner are there on porpuse ;)
I just felt like sharing since I don't wear blue very often and there are days where I want to destroy everything blue in the world except the sky. I just think it's a colour that doesn't go well with much else.
