Ich habe jeden Sommer so ein paar Lieder, die ich besonders gerne höre und oft erinnere mich an einen bestimmten Monat, eine bestimmte Situation oder generell die Atmosphäre dieses Sommers zurück, wenn ich eines der Lieder wieder höre. Ich weiß nicht, warum das ausgerechnet im Sommer so ist. Ich suche mir die Lieder auch nicht gezielt aus, es sind oft welche, die ich schon seit Jahren in meiner Musiksammlung habe und dann erst zu etwas besonderem werden.
Diesmal wollte ich diese Songs mit euch teilen.
Every summer I have some songs I listen to repeatedly. often I memorize a specific event or month or situation of a summer by just hearing the song again. I don't know why this happens especially in summer. I also don't look for the songs, I just fall in love with them and then listen to them often in the time span. Sometimes they're even pieces that have been part of my music library for years and then become something special. This year I wanted to share them with you:
Elis - "Der letzte Tag". Meine Hymne für die Arbeit. Ich arbeite dann und dort, wo andere urlaub machen und wir haben keine Klimaanlage. (My anthem for work. I work while and where other people are on holiday and we don't have an AC.)
Emilie Autumn - "Let it die". Eines der Lieder, das ich seit Jahren höre, aber nie begonnen habe, es zu lieben. Neulich, auf dem Heimweg hat mein MP3player angefangen es zu spielen und seither bin ich verliebt. (One of the songs I own since ages, but never started to love it. A few days ago I listened to it on the way home and fell in love.)
Sinisthra - "Ice Cube Sun". Ich habe Sinisthra erst vor kurzem entdeckt - ratet mal, warum. Und ich habe mich sofort in dieses Lied verliebt. (I've only discovered Sinisthra recently- guess why. And I instantly fell in love with this song)
Disillusion - "The Black Sea". Disillusion höre ich jetzt schon seit Ewigkeiten, und das Lied hat mir immer gefallen. Aber schon allein der Gedanke "We are dancing in the sea" und der In-your-face-Faktor des Stücks erfrischen bei diesen Temperaturen einfach. (I've been a listener of Disillusion for half an eternity now and I've always liked this song. But now, only the thought "We are dancing in the sea" and the In-your-face-quality of the song refresh at this heat.)
Dieses Mal möchte ich euch etwas über das Album, oder vielleicht sogar die Band erzählen, die mich zum Female Fronted Metal gebracht haben. Angefangen habe ich ja schließlich mit Dimmu Borgir und Graveworm. Wie ich zu Epica kam ist eine eher lustige Geschichte: Eine Schulkollegin hatte mitbekommen, dass ich mich der Musik, die die ganze Klasse hörte abgewandt hatte (das war für meine Kollegen übrigens ein Skandal!) und wie es der Zufall wollte, einen Metalhammer, den ihr Vater gelesen hatte, bei sich daheim gefunden - und mir kuzer Hand mitgebracht. Wie ihr vielleicht wisst, ist im Hammer (das Magazin hieß damals noch so) immer eine CD dabei, die ich natürlich daheim sofort anhörte.
Die gekürzte Singleversion von "The Phantom Agony" war mit drauf und ich hörte sie mir, neugierig wie ich war, an. Natürlich hatte ich davor schon von Nightwish und Within temptation und anderen Bands mit Sängerin gehört, allerdings blieb ich da eher skeptisch. Simones Stimme und die Musik haben mich dann aber doch überzeugt und ich habe bald, ohne mir weitere Lieder anzuhören, sofort das Album gekauft.
Ich verbrachte den restlichen Abend damit, die CD anzuhören, die Lyrics mitzulesen und die lateinischen Chöre zu übersetzen (ja, ich bin echtes Nerd-Girl!). Wie mich das zum Female Fronted Metal brachte, weiß ich nicht mehr genau, aber man kann sagen, dass Epica wohl meine Horizont erweiterte und ich entschied, auch andere Bands mit Sängerinnen anzuhören.
Inzwischen haben Epica drei weitere Alben, jede Menge Singles, eine EP mit DVD, ein Live-Album und einen Soundtrack zu einem Film herausgebracht. Nächsten Monat kommt das vierte Studioalbum heraus.
Wenn ich mich entscheiden müsste, welches Album mir am Besten gefällt, würde ich aber trotzdem immer noch The Phantom Agony wählen. Warum? Es ist vielleicht nicht das Härteste von allen Alben, hat für mich aber einfach Atmosphäre. Lange Zeit war mein Favorit "Cry for the moon", jetzt ist es "The Phantom Agony". Ich finde es außerdem sehr abwechslungsreich, ohne dass die einzelnen Lieder dabei den Charakter der Band verlieren. Dass eine Band einen eigenen Klang hat, ist mir sehr wichtig, denn gerade im Genre Female Fronted Metal wird oft geschimpft "Das klingt ja alles wie Nightwish!". Epica haben diesen Klang und das bereits auf diesem ersten Album (es gibt auch bands, die ihn ersten finden müssen). Dieser eigene Klang oder Stil hängt großteils auch von der Stimme der Sängerin ab und ganz ehrlich, Simone könnte mir das Telefonbuch vorsingen. Aber auch ohne den Gesang zu hören haben die Lieder eine Art Signatur und das gefällt mir, dass sie trotz ihrer Diversität zusammen gehören.
Translation: This time I want to tell you something about the album, or even the band that brought me to Female Fronted Metal. Remember, I started with Dimmu Borgir and Graveworm. So a girl from my class back in those days, had heard that I abandoned the "normal" music everyone was listening to (trust me, as the whole class found out, it was kind of a scandal!) and found a Metalhammer her father had read at home and gave it to me. As you might know, there is always a CD included and the short single-version of "The Phantom Agony" was on it. I listened to it and came to like it immediately. Of course I had heard of other bands with a female singer, like Nightwish or Within Temptation, but I was kinda skeptical. But Epica kind of opened my mind and I soon started to listen to other bands with girls, too. I bought the whole album a little later and then spent the whole evening listening to the songs, reading the lyrics and translating the latin choirs (yes, I'm nerdy as that).
Now Epica have released three albums, a ton of singles, an EP with DVD, a live album and a soundtrack. Next month their fourth studio album will be released. If I had to chose, I would still pick "The Phantom Agony" as my favorite album. It is not the hardest, but to me it has the most appealing atmosphere. For a long time, my favorite track was "Cry for the moon", now it is "The Phantom Agony". What I also like is that the songs are so diverse, but don't lack the "Epica feeling". I mean the certain sound or style a band has, is very important to me, especially since in Female Fronted Metal you often hear complaints like "But this all sounds like Nightwish!". Epica do have that sound and they already had it on this, their first album (some bands need to find that style at first). This sound often is tied to the voice of the singer and to be honest, Simone could sing me the phonebook. It's not just her voice, even without it, you have that signature feeling, that marks the songs as belonging together.
Wir beginnen das Neue Jahr mit zwei neuen Dingen hier im Blog: Ich blogge jetzt wieder bilingual, also auf deutsch und englisch. Außerdem habe ich mir eine neue Kategorie überlegt, "Amy's Favorites", wo es hauptsächlich um Musik gehen wird, nämlich meine Lieblingsalben, Lieblingsvideos und Festivals. Ich werde auch eine Seite einrichten, in der ihr dann die Bibliothek findet, denn in der dynamischen Ansicht gibt es die Lables ja leider nicht mehr in einer Tabelle.
Den Anfang macht von meinen "Favorites" macht Decipher von After Forever. Es ist das zweite Album der niederländischen Band, die sich 2009 getrennt hat. Es kam 2001 heraus, ich habe es 2005 zu Ostern geschenkt bekommen. Eigentlich war es ein eher holpriger Weg zu dem Status, den das Album jetzt hat, ich zähle es nämlich zu den für mich besten Alben aller Zeiten! Beim ersten Anhören fand ich es langweilig, bei jedem weiteren Versuch bekam ich richtig das Gefühl, dass es einfach "schlecht" ist, ich konnte aber nicht sagen, was mir konkret nicht gefiel. Nachdem alle anderen, die Metal hörten in so hohen Tönen von dem Album gesprochen haben, gab ich aber nicht auf (irgendwie fand ich es auch unfair dem Album gegenüber, ich hatte immerhin eine Special Limited Edition mit Sticker, Video und Live Tracks.). Nach über einem halben Jahr (!!!) machte es dann irgendwie *Klick!* und ich hörte das Album an manchen Tagen mehrmals durch, weil ich es so toll fand und bei jedem Durchlauf etwas neues, geniales entdeckte (ja, meine Teenagerzeit war so langweilig, dass ich stundenlang Musik hören konnte). Heute habe ich meine Musikbibliothek in meinem Zen auf Shuffle und ich freue mich immer, wenn eines der Lieder gespielt wird. Es ist schon lange her, dass es einen Tag gab, an dem ich nicht wenigstens ein Lied von Decipher gehört habe. Langweilig wird es wirklich nur sehr selten. Ich lege euch wirklich ans Herz, das Album anzuhören und ihm mehrere Chancen zu geben. Altes After Forever ist sicherlich nicht die leichteste Kost, aber es lohnt sich!

I want to start the New Year on this blog with two things: First, I blog bilingual again, second, I want to start a new series of articles called "Amy's Favorites", which will mainly be about music, my favorite albums, videos and festivals. I will also make a site with all the lables, so you can find them easier, since in the new dynamic view, there is no table of contents anymore.
The first one in the series will be the album Decipher by After Forever. it came out in 2001, After Forever split up in 2009. I got the CD for Easter 2005. Now I count this album to one of the best records of all times. When i listened to it the first time, it seemed I couldn't get into it. I found it, boring and when I gave it a few more trials, I got the feeling that it actually was just "bad". Now, many of the people around me who listen to Metal only told me how great it actually is. After all, I had a Special Limited Edition (stickers, video, like tracks) and didn't want it to gather dust, so I tried for half a year. After that, it suddenly made *Click!* in my head and I started loving it. I actually listened to it more times a day and found it brilliant and heard something new and genius everytime. Now I have my music collection on Shuffle on my Zen and I'm happy to hear a Decipher track every time it switches to one. It's been a long time since there was a day, when I didn't hear a song from that album. It almost never gets boring. Old After Forever stuff really isn't the quickest delight, but I wanted to tell you to listen to that record and even if it takes a few times until you like it, it will be worth the while and the money!
